Senior Expert Service (SES)

A partner to business and government

The SES is the Foundation of German Industry for International Cooperation. It is a non-profit organisation, founded in 1983. The headquarters of SES are located in Bonn and it has offices across Germany.

It is represented in 90 countries around the globe, 28 of which are in Africa. The SES is supported by Germany’s top business organisations:

  • the Federation of German Industries (BDI),
  • the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA),
  • the German Association of Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) and
  • the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH).

The SES receives funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and numerous foundations with ties to the corporate world.

Helping people to help themselves – through volunteering

The SES is Germany’s largest volunteering organisation for experts and managers, active around the globe. Its experts help solve technical, organisational and business-related problems all over the world and in all sectors of industry. The organisation’s operations in Germany are focused on supporting young people who are at school or in training. SES expert assignments are always on a voluntary basis, in the country concerned and only by request.

The CIAT inclusion centre is looking to make its horticultural activities more profitable and environmentally friendly. Dr Schaab recommends self-made compost, integrated plant protection and insect-friendly flower patches.

12,000 experts – 60,000 assignments

The SES has a pool of around 12,000 experts from 500 different fields, most of whom are retired. However, there are approximately 1,500 who are still in work and volunteer on international assignments through the Weltdienst 30+ service. Team works! enables the SES to bring younger and older experts together – in Africa and Germany.

Since 1983, SES experts have conducted around 60,000 assignments in Germany and abroad – more than 6,000 on the African continent. The primary goal of all our activities is to pass on expertise and professional experience.

International SES assignments last an average of four to six weeks. Assignments in Germany run for longer periods of time, but take place by the hour or day. There are no costs involved for SES experts - neither to register nor to undertake an assignment.
