“For now, there’s no chance to stay, but I would love to come back some time!“

Kelvin is a graphic designer and sales man from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Last year he did an internship at Shapefruit AG, a marketing agency in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. He talks about his experiences as a Team works! participant and his time in Germany – but see for yourself!

Das Interview

In which company did you complete your internship? What were your main activities?

I have completed my internship in the agency Shapefruit in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. My main activities were graphic design based on logo design, corporate design, label design and business equipment design like business cards and more.

What did you learn during your internship, whether from your colleagues, supervisors or independently? And which of your skills were you able to pass on?

During my time in Germany I learned the advanced ways of doing graphic design from the foundation to the top. My mentor and other colleagues in the agency taught me new possibilities to approach tasks.

I think, I myself wasn’t able to pass on a lot of skills because my colleagues are already very qualified in their respective fields.

Why did you choose Team works! and the AGYO?

I chose Team works! and the AGYO because I liked the idea of having an expert from the SES to mentor me and introduce me to the system while being abroad.

What surprised you the most?

I was surprised a lot by the differences of working in a German office as opposed to what I am used to in my office at home.

In the streets I was surprised to see people using Mercedes Benz cars as taxis. In my home country that brand is mainly owned by few people – especially wealthy ones.

What are the advantages of forming a tandem with a senior expert from SES?

A senior expert will help you get used to the new lifestyle in Germany. She or he will also help with different things that need to be organised while you’re here.

What advice would you give to other young people who are interested in doing an internship in Germany?

I would say that Germany is a good place for advancing your skills because it is a developed country, therefore a lot of things are also well developed.

Name three things or experiences that you away from your internship:

  1. I acquired a lot of experience about graphic design and was able to advance my knowledge.
  2. I learned how to cooperate well with my colleagues, thus seeing how unity creates a good working environment.
  3. I learned new techniques of focusing on work from my colleagues.

What will you never forget?

I won’t forget Germany as a whole because it’s a beautiful country, and I am grateful for my colleagues at the agency who treated me so kindly. It was a nice experience I won’t forget! When my time in Germany came to an end, I remember, I was starting to think if there was a chance for me to work here because I really liked the system. For now, there’s no chance to stay, but I would love to come back some time!
