"I am enthusiastic about the opportunity I was given and am eager to continue learning!“
Matthew is an electrician from Matany, Uganda. He learned about Team works! through Filbo, a young German who spent a few weeks doing an internship at the hospital where Matthew works. Now, as part of the exchange, Matthew was able to do an internship at Filbo’s workplace in Weinsheim. We asked him about his experiences.

In which company did you complete your internship? What were your main activities?
I did my internship at STREIF Haus – a company that builds and sells prefabricated houses. My activities included the planning, execution and maintenance of electrical systems within buildings and structures. This involved wiring and connecting devices, live outlets and switches ensuring the overall safety standards and regulations. I also did grounding and bonding testing as well as inspections of electrical installations.
What did you learn during your internship? What skills and knowledge were you able to share?
I gained more practical experience applying theoretical knowledge, for example hands on experience in designing, testing and troubleshooting and I developed new technical skills.
The internship also strengthened my soft skills like time management, teamwork, good communication and meeting work deadlines. Furthermore, I learned about softwares like Microsoft Visio, understanding the importance of having electrical plans drawn and documented for purposes of sustainability and accountability. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity I was given and am eager to continue learning!
At the same time, I was able to share my insights on the importance of safeguarding against grid electrical power failures by the use of backup systems like renewable solar energy. And also the importance of paying attention to small details in electrical work – like ensuring that all wires are tightly connected, maintaining correct wire color coding. Because focusing in these small but critical details will ensure your installations are safe and functional for long period of time.
Why did you choose Team works! and the AGYO?
I wanted to broaden my network as well as actively grow my professional and personal contacts beyond my immediate circle, including people from different industries, backgrounds and countries.
I also wanted to encounter electrical engineering from different perspectives of working, so that I could gain more insights and knowledge, ultimately increasing my potential to grow my career.
What surprised you the most?
One random thing that surprised me the most was how many times I could take coffee from the work site. It really was too much caffeine for me! Plus, I was impressed by the equality in Germany: For me, it felt like there’s no difference between men and women, and they share the same responsibilities. Lastly, I was surprised by the care that wildlife is given. For example, there are bridges that exist solely for animals to cross big roads safely, and on smaller roads in forests cars stop to let animals pass.
What are the advantages of forming a tandem with a senior expert from SES?
Forming a tandem with a senior expert offers significant advantages including accelerating learning practical skills development, valuable career guidance and expanded professional networking.
What advice would you give to other young people who are interested in doing an internship in an African country?
During preparation it’s useful to learn some German to prepare for the time abroad, and to apply for the visa early enough since sometimes the embassies take quite a while to process these things. During the time in Germany, you should embrace “German” work culture: I feel like punctuality, direct communication and a strong work ethic are highly appreciated.

What will you never forget?
One thing that’s stuck with me is the concept of work life balance! Despite a strong work ethic, the people I met value a clear separation between professional and personal life which I think is valuable for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Another thing I cherished is the efficient public transport. The well-developed system offers regional trains that make exploring cities quite easy and memorable. Also, I’ll never forget Monday mornings: everyone was feeling very exhausted after the weekend!
