DAJW funded organisation Suni e.V. receives BNE award

German-Namibian organisation “Suni” among “National Education for Sustainable Development Award” winners

In October, the “National Education for Sustainable Development Awards” were presented by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German UNESCO Commission. One of the winning organisations was Suni e.V., which has implemented several Teams up! youth exchanges and an accompanying project.

The German-Namibian organisation Suni e.V. promotes education for sustainable development (ESD) in the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. The organisation visits schools and other education providers to explain the role of German-Namibian relations in global society. Founded in 2008, it has already won several prizes for its work in Germany and Namibia. Now the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German UNESCO Commission have added “National Education for Sustainable Development Award” to the list.

The German UNESCO Commission was particularly impressed by the organisation’s ESD training and exchange programme for education professionals and trainee teachers. The programme consists of several workshops, webinars and study trips. In addition, the participants implement their own ESD projects in both countries – on topics such as recycling.

The project is run in close collaboration between Suni e.V., the Light for the Children Foundation, Trier University, the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust and the Omaheke Region Directorate of Education.  The project was funded by the German-African Youth Organisation, among others.

Maury Javiera Fernandez Clark and Filbo Fensch accepted the award on behalf of Suni e.V. “Receiving this award was a great honour for Suni e.V.,” said board member Fernandez Clark. “We are delighted the international work of our dedicated volunteers is held in such high esteem.”

At the award ceremony in the German city of Bremerhaven in October, 24 organisations were honoured for their work to promote education for sustainable development (ESD) and thus the 17 global sustainable development goals.
